Just as coincidence, I was thinking the other day about how a college like Oklahoma State landed the likes of Barry Sanders AND Thurman Thomas on the same team at the same time. If you've ever been to Stillwater Oklahoma, you'd understand my attitude. No offense to Eskimo Joes, but there's really nothing to do there. We used to say, being Sooner fans and all, "Stillwater Oklahoma on a Friday night, Where men are men and sheep are nervous."

    American League home run leader Carlos Quentin has a broken right wrist stemming from his own temper, and the Chicago White Sox left fielder will have surgery Monday that could sideline him for the rest of the season. Quentin was injured Monday night in Cleveland. After fouling off a pitch while batting against Cliff Lee, Quentin hit his right hand on the bat as he was holding it with his left.

  • Rangers All-Star Kinsler out for season (AP)
    Texas Rangers All-Star second baseman Ian Kinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia. Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. Kinsler was hopeful of avoiding surgery and possibly playing again this season, but he remains sore and the Rangers said Friday he will have surgery next week.

  • Brewers sign veteran 3B Lamb (AP)
    Third baseman Mike Lamb was signed Friday by the Milwaukee Brewers, who hoped to bolster their roster for the final month of the season. A nine-year veteran who has played for Texas, Houston and Minnesota, Lamb hit .233 with one homer and 32 RBIs in 81 games with the Twins this year. He was released Thursday after being designated for assignment, and will not be eligible for Milwaukee's postseason...

  • Orioles hitting coach Crowley suspended (AP)
    Orioles hitting coach Terry Crowley was suspended for Friday's game against the Oakland Athletics for going onto the field to argue a strike call in a game two days earlier. Crowley was ejected by plate umpire Jeff Nelson in the ninth inning of Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The call was made against Ramon Hernandez and ended Baltimore's half of the inning.

  • Cubs' Zambrano has shoulder tendinitis (AP)
    Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano has right rotator cuff tendinitis and inflammation, an MRI confirmed Thursday, a potential obstacle to Chicago's chances of winning the World Series for the first time in a century. Zambrano received a shot of anti-inflammatory medication and hopes to return to the rotation next week.

    The Los Angeles Angels showed the Detroit Tigers what playoff teams look like. Torii Hunter homered to back Ervin Santana, and the Angels beat the Tigers 7-1 Thursday to cut their magic number to six for clinching their fourth AL West title in five seasons. Santana (15-5) struck out eight in 7 1-3 innings, allowing one run and six hits.

    The Minnesota Twins would have been a lot happier if this marathon road trip had ended one city sooner. Jesse Litsch threw a four-hit shutout and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep with a 9-0 victory over the Twins on Thursday night. Minnesota wrapped up a season-long 14-game road trip at 5-9 and fell 1 1/2 games behind the idle Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.




  • Brewers' skid now 4 as Padres win 5-2 (AP)
