The big news out of the general managers’ meetings this week in Florida involved the decision to clarify the rules so that some, but not all, hits to the head would be subject to in-game penalty and possible supplementary discipline. No need for me to stir the same pot, especially since, like Jim, I’m baffled by the GMs’ satisfaction over coming to unanimous agreement on what looks to be a limp bit of pseudo-legislation.

One minute Brad Keselowski was headed towards his best finish with Roger Penske’s team, the next he was heading towards the wall upside down. His harrowing experience became a national story, leading to three weeks of probation for the driver who caused the mayhem: Carl Edwards. Does Keselowski agree with the punishment? Will he change his driving style in the wake of many drivers claiming he needed to be taught a lesson? Brad answers those questions, describes the scenario in which he thinks Carl would be in jail by now, and discusses his planned retaliation in the fourth installment of his SI.com Driver Diary.

PEORIA, Ariz. — Here on the outskirts of Phoenix is one of the rare treasures of baseball, Ken Griffey Jr., he of the 630 home runs, every last one believed to be legit, and counting. He is fitter than he was last year — eight or nine pounds to the better, a Mariners person said, and he looks even better than that — and his knees finally feel fine after two straight years of pain, underperformance and surgery. He is also almost as entertaining in the clubhouse as he is on the field, riffing on anything and everything that comes to mind. (His hot topic on this day, while watching Nomar Garciaparra call an end to his career on MLB Network, was how he won’t call a press conference when he retires. “I’ll send a fax,” he said.)
